It is essentially a mix of limestone and minerals that have been heated in a kiln and have been transformed by heat. Clinker is the backbone of cement production and used as a binder in many cement products. The lumps or nodules of clinker are usually of diameter 3-25 mm and dark gray in color. Clinkers can be stored for long periods of time in a dry condition without noticeable degradation of quality and used by cement manufacturers when raw materials are found to be scarce or unavailable. Along with salt and other substances present in small amounts, there are four main components of clinker namely Alite, Belite, Illuminate and Ferrite. The quantity of these components to be mixed depends on the kinds of clinker to be made.

There are various kinds available depending on the type of cement for which clinker is produced. The various kinds of clinker are as follows- 

  1. Sulfate resistant clinker
  2. Low heat clinker
  3. White clinker
  4. Low alkali clinker
  5. Belite Calciumsulfoaluminate turnesite



Clinker is used in the construction segment at possibly every stage. Different types of clinker are used depending on the kind of structure made and function that each kind of clinker performs when applied. Concrete is a must for massive engineering projects, heavy structures and high strength concrete engineering. 

Sulfate resistant clinker is a blended cement designed to improve the performance of concrete where the risk of sulfate attack may be present. It is used in sewage linings, water storage & treatment works, coastal structures, bridge piers etc.

Low heat clinker is a special tailored clinker that has the ability of low heat of hydration during setting. It is generally used for aesthetic purposes in construction. It is used to construct dams, large footings, wind turbine plinths and in chemical factories.

White clinker is known for its high grade of whiteness and is a little more expensive than the gray product. White cement is used only in fixing marble tiles, sheathing of walls, floors, and roofs. The only purpose of the white cement is to give charm and decorate the surface areas of the building.

Low-alkali Clinker is used to produce cement that has an alkali percentage of not more than 0.6%. It helps mitigate the potential for these harmful reactions which may occur in concrete when exposed to continuous moisture.


  • Compressive strength – Clinker enhances the capacity of the structure to withstand heavy loads or compression. Clinker increases the durability and the strength of the structure where it is put in the building blocks.
  • Prevents cracking –  Clinker has the ability to evolve or absorb the heat whenever there is hydration. In simple words, clinker has a great water resistance capacity that prevents cracking when the structure dries up.
  • Durability performance – It provides improved durability for concrete in most aggressive environments reducing the risk of deterioration of the structure and structural failure.
  • Chemical corrosion resistance – Clinker is highly alkaline material and protects the structure from environmental  deterioration by chemical or electro-chemical reactions.
  • Good reflector of light – White clinke not only gives smooth finish and surfacing to the floor but also saves energy to enlighten the interior and exterior of the building as it is a good reflector of light.
